In the air, that breathed a dinosaurs, people would not be able to survive - VIDEO PDF Print E-mail

Seismic tomography has allowed geologists to understand the processes taking place on Earth 250 million years ago. It turned out that in the atmosphere of the era of the dinosaurs contain an amount of carbon dioxide in which humanity could not survive.

Dinosaurs reign on the earth 350 million years ago, breathed the air with a 5-fold concentration of carbon dioxide compared with the current. Humanity in its current form could not exist in the world of that era.

After all, if in a clean place, where people breathe freely, the concentration of carbon dioxide is about 0.03%, in stuffy offices metropolis with 0.1% carbon dioxide workers constantly complain of fatigue and other ailments.

Permanent residence in such an atmosphere leads to negative changes in the structure of human DNA.

A new technique for estimating the content of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere prehistoric Earth allows you to not only understand the ecological processes of an earlier era, but also to predict changes in the Earth's climate in the future.

The reason for such a high content of carbon dioxide in the air were the constant earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. As a result of melting and combustion of soil and stones in streams of molten lava, the atmosphere is constantly thrown thoUSAnds of cubic meters of CO2, turning the planet into a giant greenhouse.

To study the atmosphere of the Jurassic period, a research team led by Dutch scientist Duve van der Meer apply the technique of seismic tomography. With it, experts studied the propagation of seismic waves, allowing, in particular, to better understand the structure of the tectonic plates beneath the surface of our planet.

Seismic tomography will accurately calculate the details of the movements of tectonic plates, which resulted in millions of years ago destroyed the old continent and formed new ones.

Calculations of emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere as a result of such changes showed that 250 million years ago the earth produces twice as much CO2 than today.

The results were published in the latest issue of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
