In the Russian Antarctic station Vostok drilling resumed, leading to the relict subglacial lakes. "Drilling operations resumed after a break of 11 months with a mark of 3724 meters", - said the chief of the Russian Antarctic expedition Valery LUKin, adding, that before the penetration of the lake is 45 meters.
Vostok station located in the interior of Antarctica at a distance of 1260 km from the coast at an altitude of 3488 meters above sea level and has a harsh climate. This is the coldest place on earth. Now, at the height of the Antarctic summer, the temperature here ranges from -24,1 ° C during the day to - 37,6 ° at night. Drilling operations are conducted only in the warmest season.

Lake Vostok was discovered in 1987, it is locted under a layer of ice, its size is 50 km. Drilling of the well began in 1989. At February 5, 2012, scientists reached the border of ice-water at a depth of 3769 meters, were taken first water samples in which traces of living organisms. But a year later the water rose to 500 meters and had to continue to work with Midway, paving a new parallel to the first hole. This work is now nearing completion and scientists expect the re-entry into the relict lake.
