Ammonia storms on Saturn, an astronomers detected - VIDEO PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 04 June 2014 13:00

Working since 2004 on the orbit of Saturn probe "Cassini" found, using the spectrometer VIMS, that the upper layers of Saturn's atmosphere during a hurricane filled with a huge amount of ammonia and water. It also held a series of measurements of the "great white spots". This allowed for the first time to confirm the hypothesis of a different composition of Saturn's atmospheric layers. The main element is a multi-component aerosol, which is found in the composition of ammonia ice with a great deal of ice water. With high probability, the third may be ammonia hydrosulfide. Simulation results gave the following ratio of components: ammonia water and ice - 55 % and 22 %, respectively, hydrosulfide ammonia - 23 %. These substances, according to experts, the hurricane picks up from the lower atmospheric layers of Saturn, but they are not available for observations in the upper layers due to too dense cloud cover. During a hurricane, it are able to "break" the clouds and reach the "surface" due to high speed vertical air flow that reaches 480 kilometers per hour. This confirms, that Saturn's surface has the form "sandwich" consisting of water vapor, ammonia and ammonium hydrosulfide clouds, VIDEO:
