Suit for the Invisible Man will be based on the scales of sardines, herring and sprat PDF Print E-mail

Dr. Tom Jordan from the University of Bristol and Professor Julian Partridge and Dr. Nicholas Roberts from Bristol School of Biology, found that the scales of certain fish, such as sardines, herring and sprat is arranged in such an unusual way, that allows do not to polarize the reflected light and provide its high reflectivity. In this regard, such fish as sardines, herring and sprat are nearly invisible to predators in the water. This property of the scales of sardines, herring and sprat is formed by the fact, that the surface of the scales contains not one, but two types of guanine crystals, with different optical properties, and the particular combination of these crystals prevents polarization of the reflected light. According to Nicholas Roberts, if we can use these crystals in air, it will be possible to create a kind of suit for the Invisible Man.
