Mark McMenamin, the paleontologist from Mount Holyoke College, USA has suggested, that hundreds of millions of years ago in the Earth's seas, there was a huge predator, the octopus, the prototype of the legendary Kraken, which was on top of the food chain in ancient seas and could pose a threat to all the inhabitants of those seas, including ichthyosaurs. Such an assumption was made based on scientists studying the fossils of nine ichthyosaurs Shonisaurus popularis, which are located in the Nevada, USA. The fact that many of the bones of ichthyosaurs found broken, as if someone very much squeezed the body of ichthyosaurs from the bones of ichthyosaurs shifted manner that is characteristic of the modern inhabitants of the sea, dead from the attack of an octopus. Preliminary calculations show, that the ancient octopus predator had to be at least hundreds of meters lengthwise to cope with the ichthyosaurs. However, fossils of ancient giant octopus is very difficult to detect, because the octopus has not a skeleton, which can be found.
