Kohunlich or on the Yucatec language - Shlabcheen (X-laabcheen) - is a major archaeological site of the Maya civilization, located in the state of Quintana Roo, Yucatan, Mexico, 70 kilometers on west of Chetumal and 10 kilometersof the highway number 186. The modern Spanish name Kohunlich has nothing to do with the Mayan language, but it is a distorted pronunciation of English Cohune Ridge. In the archaeological complex of the Maya civilization Kohunlich are located a pyramids, utility rooms, areas for ball games, squares and the remains of a drainage system with a huge reservoir for water. According to scientists, this Mayan city was founded 1,800 years ago, but most buildings were built 1,500 years ago. The main attraction of the city Kohunlich is the pyramid of Masks, which built in honor of the Sun God, where tourists can see the six giant masks.
