Uxmal - Mayan city on the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico - the address on a map, photos PDF Print E-mail

The architectural complex of Uxmal - is it ruins of the Mayan city, located in the northwest of the Yucatan Peninsula, 68 km south of the Merida City. The name comes from the Uxmal «oox-mmal» - "thrice built". Uxmal is an example of Puuc architectural style (see the photo above) and, together with archaeological complex Labna and Sayil palace, the architectural complex of Uxmal has been declared as the UNESCO World Heritage Site in the 1996. Scientists believe, that between 7 and 10 centuries AD, the city of Uxmal was a major religious and ceremonial center of the Maya in the region, but after the 11th century, most residents fled the city. The ruins of Uxmal are divided into six major archaeological groups: "The Governor's Palace" - one of the most beautiful buildings, decorated with sculptures and a mosaic frieze, "Adivino" - is a temple on an oval pyramid of 38 meters tall, "Dovecote" "Nunnery Quadrangle" - representing a complex of four buildings, "House of Turtles" - got its name because it is decorated images of these animals and the "Dwarf House" - a number of temples erected on top of each other. In the evening, the Mayan ruins at Uxmal are illuminated of laser light show.
