Possible war of China and Vietnam in the South China Sea

Recent anti-Chinese riots in Vietnam were provoked ongoing attempts to capture that part of China's South China Sea claimed by Beijing and Hanoi . These protests represent a new chapter in the long-term Sino -Vietnamese dispute over these marine areas . Although the two countries have long been unable to reach a consensus on the sovereign status of these waters , recent events have become the first in recent episode , when this conflict joined nationalist speeches . In light of this fact is not surprising that the press reports about the importance of these disturbances were too emotional and even exaggerated. For example, some journalists have suggested that these disturbances can be a convenient excuse for Beijing for the annexation of the region - as in the case of Russia and the Crimea. Others believe that China may have to join the " war emergency " to teach Vietnam and the residents of this region a good lesson . However, these terms are likely to be too far-fetched and erroneous. Paradoxically , these disturbances are likely to lead to a de-escalation of the conflict between China and Vietnam , and not an ongoing confrontation . Such a stabilizing effect due to the fact that these uprisings are evidence not so much of China's power in Southeast Asia as a hidden weakness of his position in this region. Although Beijing controls only the Chinese People's Republic , many of its citizens are increasingly hold it responsible for the safety and well-being of Chinese living abroad. Chinese live throughout Southeast Asia , including Vietnam , however , the Chinese government still does not have enough funds to provide them with such assistance. When the Chinese living abroad , are in danger as this time happened in Vietnam , China looks weak . The same thing happened in 1998, when anti-Chinese uprising began in Indonesia and Beijing could not stop them. Such impotence caused a lot of criticism of the Chinese leadership , which should be responsible for resolving the situation . And today the words critics are likely to resonate among Chinese leaders who are watching what is happening in Vietnam. And these fears are growing more and more due to the fact that since 1998 the Achilles heel of the Chinese state has increased. Nationalist sentiment in some segments of Chinese society strengthened and the emergence of social networking sites such as Weibo, greatly facilitated their spread. In this situation, the attack on the Chinese that occurred in Vietnam, surely, will flow requirements retaliate . However , as in the case of Indonesia more than 10 years ago , Beijing has at its disposal a rather limited set of tools . This concerns in particular the possibility of military conflict with Vietnam , as rates rise in conflict with Hanoi only increase the level of anti-Chinese sentiment in this country of Southeast Asia , which will increase the number of interventions against the Chinese living there . If this happens, China will need to strike an even tougher retaliation that will result in unstable and expanding spiral of conflict. This scenario is possible , but unlikely. Chinese leaders are still trying to avoid the risks , so they are unlikely to take such action , which could lead to unpredictable consequences , but at the same time they do not want to accept the fact that, according to most of the public, is a provocation by the Vietnamese. In light of these facts worth to assume that in the coming days, China has publicly condemned the actions of the Vietnamese. However, in the long term, these disturbances are likely to lead to de-escalate the conflict and the return to the status quo in relations between the two Asian countries , in which they will continue to insist on their demands , but will refrain from direct military confrontation in the South China sea.
