03/23/2011 Railways in Brazil: timetable, train fares and route map

Railway in Brazil are not so developed as highways (highways on the map are marked in red, and railways are marked in yellow). The length of railway in Brazil is 27,882 km, length of electrified railway is 1,122 km.

Recently undertaken some special projects, such as Steel Railway (Ferrovia do Aco), which binds iron ore from the steel industry and the ports on the southeast coast. As a result of the recent privatization of the Brazilian railway system is expected influx of new investment that will facilitate the accelerated development of this sector of the economy.

Rail transportation in Brazil is now managed by a variety of private and public operators, including America Latina Logistica, Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos and SuperVia.

In Brazil was a lot of different standards of railway, but now use 4 major:

Irish gauge (1600 mm) - 4057 km.

Narrow gauge (meter) (1000 mm) - 23 489 km.

Double track (1000 mm and 1600 mm) - 336 km (as of 1999).

European gauge (1435 mm) - 10 km metro line in Sao Paulo

also standard gauge used in the Amazon rainforest.

In September 2008, Brazil's Ministry of Transport has announced a high-speed train project for the World Cup, which connects São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Campinas. The cost is estimated at $ 15 billion.
